It doesn't take a clairvoyant to guess that technology reporters, bloggers and enthusiasts will jump on the latest rumor about Apple. That might be why 2009 was the year of the Apple tablet device rumor. We waited in anticipation at every Apple event to hear an official announcement of this mythical gadget. All of that waiting was in vain. We also saw several companies wage public battles against one another in 2009. Throughout the year, corporations like AT&T and Verizon, Apple and Psystar, and AMD and Intel waged legal battles against each other. In some cases, the companies found common ground and settled their differences. It's clear that 2009 was a good year to be a corporate lawyer. But we didn't feel that was a fun tech trend to highlight on the official list. Instead, we've looked at the 12 months of 2009 and pinpointed 5 trends, listed in no particular order, that not only made a big impact at the time but promise to shape future events as well.

Although certain documentaries are fond of trotting out ancient aliens or other fringe theories to explain our ancestors' advancements, in truth, we need reasons no more far-flung than the fact that ingenuity is humanity's oldest quality. Left to our own devices and allowed to exist without constant fear of death by hunger or violence, we devise some startling stuff - even if some of our better efforts don't outlast our calamities. Then again, sometimes they do. The Western world's progress was knocked back centuries by the Dark Ages, but the Greek and Roman knowledge it lost - some examples of which you'll find in these pages - later found its way back to the Europe via the Islamic world, where in the meantime it had helped spawn a golden age. Conversely, some answers are lost because the relevant question hasn't yet been asked, or because a better answer shoves it into the dustbin of history.
Couple this effect with groupthink, which is when people simply agree to keep the status quo, and it's clear that group decision making won't always prove superior to flying solo. Groupthink came into play in experiments where four or more people were involved in the process. Groups of two equally-matched subjects with unlimited time to converse and reaffirm one another, and who were honest in their self-assessments, always outperformed individuals in the visual recognition experiments. When one member had worse vision, performance went down significantly. When one partner was secluded and given decision-making autonomy, and had only answer input from the other member, they also performed worse. This indicates that the back and forth exchange of ideas is key to successful group decision making. In cases where participants are honest and communicate openly, two heads are better than one. European leaders plan an inperson emergency summit on Thursday evening in Brussels to discuss the tensions between Russia and Ukraine. European Union Council president Charles Michel said in his invitation letter to the 27 leaders that the use of force and coercion to change borders has no place in the 21st century. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had already planned to hold a 90-minute virtual meeting of Group of Seven leaders on Thursday afternoon. That meeting was announced last week Michel praised the heads of states and government for the unity shown by the bloc in recent days to ensure the adoption of sanctions against Russia and deter its suspected plans to invade Ukraine.
