In advance of climate summit, tension among Biden aides on China policy

“Money laundering” tops the list of Suspicious Activity Reports tied to crowdfunding websites. Stolen credit cards numbers, for example, are only useful if you can convert all of that credit into cash. Crowdfunding websites, it turns out, provide the perfect laundering platform. The criminal launches a phony crowdfunding campaign. Then makes donations to himself using the stolen credit card numbers. Moving quickly to avoid detection, the crook can cash in the crowdfunding account before anyone catches wind of the scam. A twist on this method is to launch a whole bunch of small crowdfunding campaigns simultaneously using false names and phony IP addresses. Again, the campaigns are funded with stolen credit cards, but the individual amounts are low enough to avoid close scrutiny. In highly sophisticated operations, crowdfunding fraud is also combined with lots of other diversionary tactics to “layer” or “structure” financial transactions in ways that avoid detection. In one case, FinCEN caught wind of a foreign entity that was collecting fund through multi-state cash deposits, foreign checks, and deposits from crowdfunding sites to wire large amounts of money to a “high risk country,” possibly to fund terrorists.
To which should you subscribe? When you choose one of them, what happens next? Don't get discouraged and quit, though -- once you learn how to use news feeds, you'll save time by scanning headlines from your favorite sites. On the next page, we'll take a look at how the format got its start and what it was designed to do. Before long, you'll have all the information you could ever read. The Name's Been Changed. Please Make a Note Of It. The original version of RSS, created by UserLand in 1997, stands for RDF Site Summary or Rich Site Summary. Netscape Communications used the technology to deliver content to users of its MyNetscape portal. In 2003, the name changed to Really Simple Syndication with the release of the RSS 2.0 standard when a new team began work on it. Reading RSS feeds can be a great time-saver. In the time it takes you to scan whole Web pages for information, you can review headlines from dozens of sites all collected in one place.|New studies reveal more potential health benefits of coffee, this time regarding liver and nervous system diseases. There's long been evidence that a cup of coffee can bolster one's mood and help stave-off depression, but new findings suggest the ubiquitous drink may protect both the liver and the nervous system from incurable diseases, too. Cirrhosis is a disease marked by irreversible scarring of the liver. Although treatment can prolong liver function, there isn't a cure for the disease, and it causes more than 1 million deaths a year around the world. Cirrhosis can be brought on by overeating, the long-term use of alcohol and by viruses like hepatitis B and C. The disease has been classified as a global health burden - and new research suggests that the easily available coffee bean could help mollify its impact. Oliver Kennedy of the University of Southampton completed a meta-analysis of nine long-term studies that included several thousand men and women. Their findings, published in the March 2016 issue of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, suggest that two cups of coffee per day could reduce the risk of cirrhosis by 44 percent and cut the risk of death from cirrhosis in half.

Western unity will be tested in the days ahead, but it’s off to a solid start - which is a relief for Biden. One of the biggest unknowns about the current crisis is exactly how it will play out in relation to American domestic politics. Biden prepared Americans for economic pain during his White House remarks. “Defending freedom will have costs for us as well, here at home. We need to be honest about that,” he said. At a minimum, the crisis seems sure to lift gas prices, which are already high, and add to inflationary pressures and supply chain problems. Then there is the impact on financial markets. The major American stock indices fell sharply again on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 entering official correction territory - that is, down 10 percent from its peak.
Although Henry Ford is popularly credited with inventing the first automobile, it was actually Charles Brady King, an inventor and engineer, who created and drove the first motorized carriage. In March of 1896, King roared along the avenues at about, well, 7 miles (11 kilometers) per hour. In addition to the first motorized car, King created more than 60 different machines in his lifetime, including a range of pneumatic tools, among them, the jackhammer. Jackhammers were a godsend of sorts, particularly in the mining industry. In the 1800s, mining was downright treacherous and miserable work. Breaking up rock by hand in damp, dark tunnels was not a joyful experience for most laborers. Steam engine technology of the day might have helped expedite the process, but because these machines required combustion, they were far too dangerous for use in tight quarters that often filled with explosive gases. Compressed air was a much safer option.|Didn't quite hit that note? Auto-Tune might be able to fix that for you. Want to sound like a robot? Auto-Tune can help you out there, too. If you switched on the radio in the summer of 1998, chances are you got a taste of Cher's "Believe," an up-tempo ode to bouncing back after a rough breakup. More than a quarter century after first rising to prominence as a 1960s folk artist, the 52-year-old Cher was once again climbing the charts. In malls, dance clubs and laser bowling alleys across the country, "Believe" played frequently. By the time the dust had settled, the song had become Cher's bestselling recording ever -- and one of the bestselling singles of all time. At the time, the most notable feature of the song was an electronic modification on the vocals. The effect first appears 35 seconds into the song, while Cher sings "I can't break through." On each of the last three words, Cher's voice undergoes a bizarre electronic glitch.
Consider the Source -- This applies not only to who you buy from but also to what you buy. Some brick-and-mortar stores will charge you significantly more for your games than you'll pay an online retailer. As for the game makers, experiment with an independent. You may discover that the lesser-known developers offer an equally satisfying product. Staying Power -- Notice how your favorite games are still favorites months or even years later? The "replay ability" of a game is something a frugal player should keep in mind. In addition, think about how long it will take you to solve or master the particular title. Balance length with price. Buying a seemingly pricey game could be the best budgetary decision -- that is, if you end up playing it for a good long time. Then again, buying a video game may not be the smartest choice. There are many options available for gamers who prefer to rent. Redbox kiosks offer rentals by the day, although the selection is limited.
