Laser pointers are readily available to all individuals and can be obtained from the Internet, electronic stores, and novelty stores at marginal cost.
Laser pointers must provide warning labels, as required by the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Each label must include the laser hazard symbol, laser classifications, maximum high powered laser, and operating wavelength (s). In addition, ANSI standards and the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission are applicable.

Features of the laser pointer
Diode laser pointers operate in the visible range of 400-760 nanometers (nm). The power emitted by these lasers varies from 1 to 5 mW. Eye damage can occur from unsafe use of laser pointers. Hazardous exposure may result from prolonged direct exposure to the beam or from a specular reflected beam. There is no known associated skin risk with laser pointers.

The majority of red and green laser pointers are classified in class 2 or 3R. Please do not purchase more powerful Rechargeable Laser Pointer as they can be dangerous and require significant administrative and security measures.

Green laser pointer
Green laser pointers are used with caution as they are more likely to be classified in a higher risk class and may present a hazard to the eyes. Green laser pointers produce a wavelength of green light at 532nm that is more easily absorbed by the human eye. At this wavelength, the human eye is much more sensitive to green light, and laser light will appear brighter. Estimates of the sensitivity of the human eye for green laser pointer vary from 10 times to 50 times more than that for red laser sensitivity. The best practice is to use a red laser pointer and follow all of the manufacturer's safety guidelines.
