Opinion | It’s time to rethink when we should reimpose covid restrictions

You're producing data every time you do anything online, leaving a digital trail that others can come along and mine for useful information. The numbers and types of devices that produce data have been proliferating as well. Besides home computers and retailers' point-of-sale systems, we have Internet-connected smartphones, WiFi-enabled scales that tweet our weight, fitness sensors that track and sometimes share health related data, cameras that can automatically post photos and videos online and global positioning satellite (GPS) devices that can pinpoint our location on the globe, to name a few. Don't forget weather and traffic sensors, surveillance cameras, sensors in cars and airplanes and other things not connected with individuals that are constantly collecting data. You'll find multiple definitions of big data out there, so not everyone agrees entirely on what is included, but it can be anything anyone might be interested to know that can be subjected to computer analysis. And these large, unwieldy sets of data require new methods to collect, store, process and analyze them.
According to PolitiFact, a long-standing urban legend has convinced many people over the years that rank-and-file members of the House of Representatives only have to serve for two years in order to receive $174,000 annually for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately for members of Congress, the legend is, well, a legend. A report on "Retirement Benefits for Members of Congress" stipulates that no member of Congress is eligible to receive pension until they've served for at least five years (senators serve six-year terms, but members of the House have to seek reelection every two years). There are other provisions as well: The congressperson or senator has to be 62 years old or at least 50 with 20 years of service (or, if they're whiz kids, they can be any age, as long as they've served for 25 years) before they can begin receiving their pension. And that $174,000 rumor isn't quite right either.
Furthermore, we evaluate zero-shot action recognition, which can be cast as a video-to-text retrieval task. Our method significantly surpasses its competitive counterparts by a large margin, as demonstrated in Fig. 3 (a). As a bonus, we find our method also benefits single-modality video representations as shown in Fig. 3 (b), where the top-1 accuracy of action recognition with linear evaluation is reported. Pre-training for video-text retrieval. Dominant pre-training methods for video-text retrieval can be classified into two categories. This kind of methods is more favored by large-scale retrieval applications due to its high efficiency. Despite they can build local associations between video-text tokens, each pair of video and text candidates needs to be fed into the model for similarity calculation during inference, resulting in extremely low efficiency. In contrast, our method gains the benefits of the above two kinds of methods, i.e., achieving fine-grained video-text interactions while remaining high retrieval efficiency.|The iMuz is the larger of Latte's two tablet offerings. A year after the release of the iPad in April 2010, Apple was selling millions of units at $500 apiece, and Google was working hard to jump into that new market. In 2010, many electronics companies launched devices intended to compete with the iPad that ran on Google's Android operating system. But there was a problem with that approach: Android was built for phones, not tablets. Because the underlying hardware was mostly the same, the Android tablets worked. They just weren't very good. Google did its best to remedy that, and in early 2011, the company launched Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the first version of the OS built specifically for tablets. Honeycomb offered a new user interface and was optimized for larger 7- and 10-inch (17.8- and 25.4-centimeter) displays and the latest mobile hardware, like Nvidia's dual-core Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip. Even after the launch of Honeycomb, Android tablets had trouble catching on.
To do this, Mr. Putin shifted military units from Russia’s border with China, showing confidence in his relations with Beijing. The two powers, in effect, are coordinating to reshape the global order to their advantage, though their ties stop short of a formal alliance. This emerging order leaves the U.S. America has close partners and deep economic and political interests. The Biden administration now faces big decisions on whether to regear its priorities, step up military spending, demand allies contribute more, station additional forces abroad and develop more diverse energy sources to reduce Europe’s dependence on Moscow. “We all thought we were looking at a Europe whole, free and at peace indefinitely,” said Michele Flournoy, who served as the Pentagon’s top policy official during the Obama administration. “We knew that Russia would conduct gray zone operations. That Putin would use his KGB playbook to create instability on his periphery. “And we’re seeing that while Beijing doesn’t really like Putin’s tactics, they’re willing to band together as authoritarian states against the Western democracies,” Ms. Flournoy added.
