Is Overharvesting Really An Issue? However, there are people and groups that say that human consumption of krill is bringing harm to the species' existence. According to them, harvesting of this crustacean is endangering the lives of creatures dependent on krill and is dealing a blow to the food chain. These scare tactics are often produced by groups who sell competing sources of omega-3, which is abundant in krill oil. Krill harvesting is actually one of the most sustainable practices in the world. For one thing, krill is the largest biomass in the world and has a high reproduction rate. If you join all krill from different points of the planet, you'll find that they still weigh more than any animal population. In other words, there are just more of them than any animal on the planet. Krill for human consumption is taken from the Antarctic Ocean, where majority of the crustaceans' population is found.
