Lots of sites that publish regular information have their own RSS feeds, like Marshall Brain's BrainStuff weblog. The trouble with living in the Information Age is paradoxical: There's too much information. It's everywhere. How are you supposed to keep track of all the news, sports, weather and blogs you follow? Better yet, how are you going to do that and find time for work, school and family? If you're addicted to the constant flow of data that we know as the Internet, you're not going to be able to manage it without some help. One way to keep track of it all has grown very popular since its introduction in 1997: RSS. Short for Really Simple Syndication (at least now -- more on that later), RSS is a way to subscribe to a source of information, such as a Web site, and get brief updates delivered to you. When you subscribe, you'll get a feed -- often a series of headlines and brief summaries -- of all the articles published on that particular Web page.
It also puts a damper on the idea of peeing on someone else if he or she is feeling the pain of a jellyfish sting and wants the area washed clean. And forget about drinking urine if you're desperately thirsty (not a good idea anyway, regardless of bacteria). The findings could lead to a new means of determining the presence of infection or, eventually, treating an overactive bladder. Long before urine travels out of the body and encounters bacteria lurking on the skin, it already contains bacteria. Medical textbooks have long taught that if there is bacteria present in urine, then an infection also is present. However, the Loyola researchers used an ultra-sensitive DNA-based method to uncover low levels of bacteria in normal urine from patients without urinary tract infections. The bacteria wouldn't have been detected otherwise. But even the midstream urine test was never meant to imply that urine is sterile. It was developed in the 1950s by epidemiologist Edward Kass, who designed the reactionary strip to react by changing color if it detected more than 100,000 cell clusters per milliliter of urine. It's something to keep in mind if you end up lost in the wilderness. Contemplate drinking your own urine - or having someone else pee on a wound to disinfect it. It's not as sanitary as your favorite survivalist may have led you to believe. Do you really need to poop every day? How can a PVC pipe help you survive? Engelhaupt, Erika. "Urine is Not Sterile, and Neither is the Rest of You." Science News. May 22, 2014. (Sept. Wolfe, Alan, et al. Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
Henrysson (1971) suggests that the rpbis tells more about the predictive validity of the total test than does the biserial r, in that it tends to favor items of average difficulty. It is further suggested that the rpbis is a combined measure of item-criterion relationship and of difficulty level. Biserial correlation. Biserial correlation coefficients (rbis) are computed to determine whether the attribute or attributes measured by the criterion are also measured by the item and the extent to which the item measures them. Analyzing the distractors (e.i., incorrect alternatives) is useful in determining the relative usefulness of the decoys in each item. Items should be modified if students consistently fail to select certain multiple choice alternatives. The alternatives are probably totally implausible. Therefore of little use as decoys in multiple choice items. A discrimination index or discrimination coefficient should be obtained for each option in order to determine each distractor's usefulness (Millman & Greene, 1993). Whereas the discrimination value of the correct answer should be positive, the discrimination values for the distractors should be lower and, preferably, negative.
Bonnie, a Brindle Great Dane, with Sparkle, a Chihuahua mix. The relationship between people and dogs goes back at least 15,000 years, making dogs potentially the first animal to be domesticated. In that time, dogs have played many roles and performed many jobs for their human companions. Dogs come in a startling variety of shapes and sizes, but from the giant and noble Great Dane to the tiny and tenacious Chihuahua, they are all one species with one basic history. In this article, we'll explore where dogs came from and why they look and act the way they do. We'll also learn what recent genetic work has to tell us about our dogs. Talk about how to find the right dog for you. Canids are part of a larger group called Carnivora, which also includes bears, cats and seals. Fossils show us that Canidae split off from the common ancestors of Carnivora about 40 million years ago. From about 15 million years ago, we can subdivide Canidae into three subgroups: fox-like animals, wolf-like animals and South American canids, such as the maned wolf and crab-eating fox.
