But hydrogen has some serious drawbacks that have slowed its adoption as an automotive fuel. Likewise, the light gas is difficult to store in large enough quantities to be useful for transportation. Many of the so-called hydrogen generators work in the same fashion: An onboard electrolysis device pulls water from a storage tank, and, using electricity generated by the car's alternator, splits the hydrogen and oxygen. The problem with these onboard generators is one of capacity. That energy has to come from somewhere, and in a car, that means a significant additional load is placed on the alternator. The car may be producing hydrogen fuel, but it's burning more energy than it creates. As a result, hydrogen generators typically produce miniscule amounts of the gas. Turbulence in a car engine's airflow can greatly affect the engine's efficiency. The action of the pistons sucks in a precise mix of fuel and air, which is then ignited and vented out through the exhaust.

A group of Norwegian researchers trained 23 horses, all accustomed to wearing blankets in the cold, to indicate whether they'd like their blanket put on or removed by training them to point to one of three different symbol boards posted on a fence. The horses were given carrot pieces as a reward for displaying "right" behavior, but unlike most horse training, the behavior the trainers were looking for didn't involve correctly completing human-serving tasks (stop, turn, change gait, come this way). At first, the researchers rewarded the horses with carrots when they demonstrated "correct" behaviors, while "wrong" responses (like touching the "blanket on" symbol when they were already wearing a blanket) were ignored. Dr. Cecilie M. Mejdell, a researcher at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute in Oslo. The horses received training for 10-15 minutes a day for no more than 14 days, and all 23 horses mastered the communication method in that time. In fact, on average, members of the herd learned to recognize, understand, and choose between the symbols in just 10 days.
Researchers wanted to see if the pattern of body temperatures trending downward held up outside of industrialized areas, so they headed to the Bolivian Amazon to find out. Having worked with the Tsimane studying a variety of topics related to health and aging for two decades, our team had a rich opportunity to observe whether body temperatures were similarly declining in this tropical environment where infections are common. As part of our ongoing Tsimane Health and Life History Project, a mobile team of Bolivian physicians and researchers has been traveling from village to village monitoring health while treating patients. They record clinical diagnoses. Lab measures of infection at each patient visit. When we first started working in Bolivia back in 2002, Tsimane body temperatures were similar to what was found in Germany and the U.S. 98.6 F. But over a relatively short period of 16 years, we observed a rapid decline in average body temperature in this population.

The U.S. Gemini Observatory, the European Very Large Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope have studied the neutron star merger aftermath and are already reporting observations of newly created material containing the signatures of gold and platinum. This is therefore a very significant event that's providing evidence for how heavy elements are synthesized in galaxies. This event has provided observational evidence of an assortment of theories, from proving that neutron stars do, in fact, collide, to highlighting where the precious metals in our universe come from. But GW170817 also has created its own mystery. The neutron star merger happened in a galaxy only 130 million light-years away (the previously detected black hole mergers occurred billions of light-years away), yet the signal received by LIGO and Virgo was much weaker than predicted. Scientists aren't sure why, but this is only the beginning of our gravitational wave odyssey, so we can expect many more mysteries and discoveries as waves from energetic events keep being detected. The gravitational wave network will grow even stronger once observatories in Japan and India go online in the next few years, bringing the total to five.
