Russia is also known for using disinformation as a tactic to sow confusion and discord. When Moscow invaded Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014, it mounted a campaign to sway ethnic Russian residents of the territory. Moscow has long denied its involvement in cyberattacks. While the world has seen these recent cyber events play out, the true extent of a full-scale cyberattack is not yet known, said Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor and national security expert at the University of New Haven. Both Schmidt and Rudolph agree Ukrainian infrastructure, like its electrical system, could be vulnerable to an attack. But how damaging it could be is unclear, Schmidt said. “We don’t know yet how badly someone could shut down an electrical system, could shut down a water system, or nuclear power plants - and the truth is we talk about those three things and we’re not very imaginative,” he told Global News.
The algorithm compares real-time search query data - the word or phrase you used as your search term, such as "sore throat" - against the baseline to determine levels of regional flu activity, ranging among five classifications from minimal to intense. Theoretically, GFT could provide current-day reporting (near real-time) of flu activity and predict influenza outbreaks weeks before the CDC compiles a report. According to GFT inventors, though, GFT's real-time reporting is meant to be used as complementary information to the clinical and virological data in traditional surveillance (the CDC and its networks). GFT's fast detection is intended to help with early detection of not only flu epidemics, but also viral strain identification and the potential for pandemics. Prior to each new year's flu season, the Google Flu Trends model is refreshed with 45 of the most useful influenza-related queries from years prior (those special search terms are chosen using logistic regression, but the exact queries and how they're weighted against others are kept top secret).|The IRS personal exemption for each taxpayer. Dependent has been eliminated while the standard deductions have been doubled. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act promised to reduce the tax bill for most Americans by lowering income tax rates, introducing new deductions for business income, and significantly increasing the standard deduction and child tax credits. But some popular deductions were also eliminated starting in 2018, the most prominent being the personal exemption. In the past, every taxpayer was allowed to automatically deduct $4,050 from his or her taxable income as a personal exemption. The same personal exemption could be claimed for a spouse and for each dependent child under 19 years old, plus full-time students between 19 and 23 years old. After the 2017 tax reform, every single penny of that deduction is now gone. But don't panic. The good news is that for most taxpayers the loss of the personal exemption is more than compensated by an increase in other common deductions and credits.

This crisis, and this conversation, is no longer about Ukraine, if it ever was. As Putin would have it, this roiling calamity of his own making is about reordering the post-Cold War consensus in Europe - and perhaps evicting the U.S. Europe entirely, unwinding the gains the West made in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Putin, as it were, appears ready to snatch victory from the shadow of post-Cold War defeat. Nor should this be much of a surprise. For years, Putin has railed against the West’s supposed perfidy in expanding NATO following the Soviet collapse. Rather than watching independent countries make decisions about their own security arrangements, Putin and his inner circle envision one broad, U.S.-led conspiracy to supposedly encircle Moscow. Along the way, the Russian dictator has grown to see himself as not another middling, kleptocratic dictator, but as a figure of historic import, dedicated to restoring Russian greatness - and to unwinding the gains the West made when Russia was at its weakest following the Soviet collapse.
