Generations of these warriors had done too good a job, bringing Japan to decades of peace and effectively making the samurai obsolete. By the 18th century, the time bushido was conceptualized, the samurai were loafing. Yet samurai remained revered as noble fighters centuries later, sources of national pride and figures to be imitated. Much of the Japanese military bought into a resurgence of bushido; just 5 percent of Japan's soldiers surrendered during the war. The rest were captured or killed. Such was the case with some Pacific islands, like Guam, Saipan, Midway and islands in the Philippines. To the Japanese, keeping Allied forces off these islands meant protecting Japan. To the Allies, possession of these islands provided key locations for staging bombing raids on Japan. It's unsurprising that a number of Pacific islands saw some of the most intense fighting and highest casualty rates in the war. A strategy the Japanese used to claim or defend these islands was to flood them with huge numbers of soldiers.
People spend lifetimes trying to perfect their swings. Welcome to the gentleman's game of golf, where the breeze often carries a distant murmur of swear words, and expensive clubs suffer routine abuse. Since its inception sometime in the Middle Ages, golf has inspired obsession. Some players are lured by the refined aura of the sport, the sweeping links and velvety greens. Others are obsessed with golfing gear -- the latest drivers, spiked shoes and fancy putters. Still others simply enjoy driving around in the golf cart. There's no denying that golf sings a siren's song. Too often, however, that song is soured by a wicked slice or a ball that plummets to its final resting place at the bottom of a water trap. Ray Floyd. Any ham-fisted gorilla can grab a club. Start whacking away at the ball. However, if your goal is to improve your swing, the first step is to pay attention to the way you hold your club.
This would give you a copy of the movie on video tape (this is how people make illegal video copies of movies that are only playing in theaters), but the image would have a constant flicker to it. This is because film and video have a different frame rate, meaning they show a different number of still images per second. Most feature films are projected at a rate of 24 frames per second. This means that in one second, the projector shows 24 complete still pictures in succession. This is essentially the entire process of creating the illusion of movement with film. Video formats were designed to be used on cathode ray tube televisions, which work in a completely different way than a film projector. If you've read How Television Works, then you know that a television creates still pictures line by line, with an electron beam that passes over a phosphor-coated screen, in rows from left to right, top to bottom.|Relationships and infidelity can actually take a toll and lead to awful resultant outcomes on us and our relatives most of the time. Optimus Prime in biped form, from "The Transformers" movie.See more pictures of robots. Without a doubt, the HowStuffWorks staff is anxious about the upcoming "Transformers" movie. We don't just wonder whether it will be good. We wonder whether we'll see robots with Transformers' capabilities during our lifetimes. While full-scale Transformers seem a little implausible -. Impractical - it turns out that some existing robots have a lot in common with Transformers. In this article, we'll explore what these transforming robots look like, how they work and how they're similar to Transformers like Optimus Prime. We'll begin with an analysis of Prime himself. He's enormous and impressive, but could he ever be real? To find out, we asked engineer Michael D. Belote what it would take to build a full-scale tractor-trailer that can convert into a bipedal robot. In other words, what would it take to make a life-sized version of Optimus Prime? Some self-reconfiguring robots, or robots that can change their shapes to perform different tasks, exist today.
Whether you opt for SugarSync or Dropbox really depends on what you want from your storage provider. While both apps have their strong points -- Dropbox offers better security, while SugarSync has a better sharing model -- those looking for easy-to-use file storage are probably best suited with Dropbox; tech-savvy users who need some additional features will probably be happier with SugarSync. Whichever one you choose, you'll have the option to access your files wherever you go. Cloud storage means that you're saving your files to a remote database. That way, you can save and retrieve data from any computer or device with web access -- and you don't have to carry a memory stick or external drive. Check out How Cloud Storage Works to learn more. There's a good chance you've gone paperless with your bags at the grocery store, so why not go paperless with your shopping list?|An artist's concept of what an early lunar base might entail. See more moon pictures. So far, the moon has proven to be a terribly difficult place to visit, but we'd really love to live there. Despite years of planning, we haven't so much as set foot on it in decades -- much less established a permanent base of operations. Yet the benefits of a lunar colony would be many. A moon base would serve as the first step toward ensuring the long-term survival of the human race -- toward exploring and colonizing farther reaches of the universe. It would provide a foothold from which to improve our spaceflight technology, explore the lunar surface and expand our scientific understanding. Industry, economics and unification of the human race are all great reasons set up camp on the moon, yet none of them has propelled the construction of a permanent operation, such as the U.S.
