It’s a natural part of living in the information age: You start to feel sick, so you Google your symptoms. Both the common cold and the flu will make you feel miserable, and because both are respiratory infections with similar symptoms - coughing, aching, headache, you know the drill - it can be difficult to know which one has you in its grip. Every year, anywhere from five to 20 percent of the U.S. While many sufferers will find relief in over-the-counter medicines, influenza can be serious. Influenza-related complications may require hospitalization, and sometimes complications can be fatal. Influenza, together with pneumonia (both are lower respiratory infections), ranked as the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. For its tracking purposes, the CDC considers a fever of at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) with a cough and/or a sore throat to be an ILI. Beginning on the 40th week of the year - which is the beginning of the October to May flu season - the CDC distributes weekly influenza activity reports.

Even though the chances of dying in a mass shooting (a shooting where four or more are killed at once) are low - just one in 15,325 according to a data analysis by Business Insider - staying vigilant when visiting these so-called soft targets, especially if the unthinkable happens, could save your life. First of all, it's important to be prepared. Not paranoid and not terrified, says Paul Merritt, owner of Fortress Consulting, which specializes in helping businesses guard themselves against active-shooter situations. This is actually the important first step in maintaining your safety. Once you come to grips with the idea that you might one day find yourself in an active-shooter situation, Merritt says, you take precautions. Merritt likens preparing for an active-shooter situation to fire drills. Yes, fires exist. No, you are not likely to die in a fire. Still, it's smart to be prepared for what to do should a fire break out in your home or office building.
But war, if it happened, could be devastating to Ukraine, with unpredictable fallout for the rest of Europe and the West. Which is why, imminent or not, the world is on edge. When the Soviet Union broke up in the early ’90s, Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, had the third largest atomic arsenal in the world. The United States and Russia worked with Ukraine to denuclearize the country, and in a series of diplomatic agreements, Kyiv gave its hundreds of nuclear warheads back to Russia in exchange for security assurances that protected it from a potential Russian attack. Those assurances were put to the test in 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula and backed a rebellion led by pro-Russia separatists in the eastern Donbas region. US diplomats visited the demonstrations, in symbolic gestures that further agitated Putin. President Barack Obama, hesitant to escalate tensions with Russia any further, was slow to mobilize a diplomatic response in Europe and did not immediately provide Ukrainians with offensive weapons.
We designed, built, and evaluated a fully automated news chatbot that bases its content on a stream of news articles from a diverse set of English news sources. This in itself is a novel contribution. Our second contribution is with respect to the scoping of the chatbot conversation. The system organizes the news articles into chatrooms, each revolving around a story, which is a set of automatically grouped news articles about a topic (e.g., articles related to Brexit). The third contribution is a method to keep track of the state of the conversation to avoid repetition of information. For each news story, we first generate a set of essential questions and link each question with content that answers it. The motivating idea is: two pieces of content are redundant if they answer the same questions. As the user reads content, the system tracks which questions are answered (directly or indirectly) with the content read so far, and which remain unanswered. We evaluate the system through a usability study.
