Bread for the City’s diaper bank helps poor parents

European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis told Reuters the EU has been working on a sanctions package for several weeks and is able to act quickly to step up sanctions in cooperation with the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries. “Coming with strong sanctions against Russia is going to have some impact on the EU economy and we need to be ready for this,” he said. Hundreds of residents of the once largely pro-Russian city of Mariupol gathered in the central Theatre Square with a defiant message for President Vladimir Putin: Russia is not welcome here. “I came to show that we love Ukraine and we don’t want Russian ‘peace’ here,” said Andriy Voytsekhovskyy, 28, a painter and skater. The port city of nearly 500,000 people in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine was briefly controlled by the rebels in 2014 and has seen significant waves of violence since. Read the story here. US Representative Barbara Lee, chair of the House appropriations subcommittee responsible for US foreign aid, said Ukraine will need humanitarian aid as it faces a buildup of Russian troops near its border.
Why should Apple compatibility be the default. Leave all the Android users out in the cold? And what can be done about it? Two good questions, really, and finding these answers is exactly why the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA) was established. The OAA is, according to Google, "a global alliance of technology and auto industry leaders committed to bringing the Android platform to cars starting in 2014." Although Google doesn't specifically frame the situation as a matter of competition or conflict, or even address its rivals by name, it's clear that gaining market share would be a benefit of the OAA's success. This means that even if Apple has a lead on vehicle integration, Google and Android are planning to fight back, and they already have a group of auto manufacturers who want to use their innovations in new car models. The first members to join Google in the OAA were auto manufacturers Audi, General Motors, Honda and Hyundai, and the computer chip maker NVIDIA.|BERLIN -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said after hosting Germany's chancellor that Moscow was ready for talks with the United States and NATO on military transparency, missile deployment limits and other security issues. Putin's statement on Tuesday added to signs of easing tensions over a Russian military buildup near Ukraine and fears of a possible invasion. Hours earlier, Russia announced that some units participating in military exercises would begin returning to their bases. But U.S. President Joe Biden said the U.S. Russia’s claim and that an invasion was still a distinct possibility. He said the U.S. “every chance” to prevent a Russian invasion, but he struck a skeptical tone about Moscow’s intentions. Much remains unclear about Russia's plans. How the crisis will play out. WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH RUSSIAN TROOPS? Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that some units participating in exercises would begin returning to their bases. But it wasn't immediately clear where exactly these troops were deployed or how many were leaving.
Smart ForTwo microcar, the heretofore Europe-only runabout that's developed a cult following here. Speaking of cults, let's not forget the Mini Cooper, still a solid hit with young, hip urbanites and a solid moneymaker for BMW. But there's another reason why Trax is doing The Big Apple. It's a likely preview of a redesigned Matiz, a front-wheel-drive, 1.0-liter three-cylinder mini-hatchback sold in many overseas markets under the Chevrolet and Daewoo labels. That makes it a very important product for GM's global business. You may not be aware, but Chevrolet has lately become GM's worldwide "value" brand, with GMDAT the assigned source for all GM vehicles smaller than the Chevrolet Cobalt. That includes U.S. products like the 2008 Saturn Vue, a South Korean effort that is sold in Europe as the near-identical Opel Antara and entry-level Chevrolet Captiva. In short, Trax suggests GM is thinking globally about minicars, especially for developing countries, and could act locally if or when U.S. Trax is one of three new General Motors "global" concept vehicles unveiled at the 2007 New York Auto Show to test public reaction to a new class of small Chevrolets.
Like backscatter X-ray machines, millimeter wave scanners produce detailed full-body images of passengers, but they do it with ultrahigh-frequency millimeter wave radiation rather than X-rays. If you went on name alone, you might think "advanced imaging technology machines" could help doctors hunt for tumors or other medical conditions. In reality, the label -- euphemism, if you're cynical -- adopted by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) describes the whole-body scanners found at airports that detect weapons, explosives or other threats being carried on passengers. According to the TSA's Web site, the agency had installed 800 advanced imaging technology machines at 200 U.S. November 2012. The machines come in two flavors, based on the type of electromagnetic radiation they use to make a scan. Backscatter machines -- about 30 percent of the installations -- send low-energy X-rays to bounce off a passenger's body. Millimeter wave (mmw) scanners emit energy more akin to microwaves. Both see through clothing to produce a 3-D image of the person standing in the machine.
With that in mind, we're going to compare and contrast the two technologies across a variety of parameters, starting with the kind of energy they emit. X-rays or Millimeter Waves? A volunteer stands inside a backscatter scanner during a demo at the Transportation Security Administration's Systems Integration Facility at Ronald Reagan National Airport on Dec. 30, 2009. Backscatter technology is one of two types of imaging technology that the U.S. Both types of scanners give off energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation, which exists in nature as waves of energy made from both electric and magnetic fields. These waves travel through space and come in various sizes, or wavelengths. Millimeter wave scanners produce a special type of microwaves with wavelengths that fall in a range exactly between 0.001 meters (1 millimeter) and 0.01 meters (10 millimeters). In other words, the waves emitted by mmw scanners are much larger and therefore have less impact on small structures, such as human proteins and nucleic acids.
